Just a quick post, again.
Medical Care
Medical care in Malaysia is a lot different from the states.
I want to talk about this shortly because I recently went to the doctor.
I visited the doctor, he decided what I needed and gave me a prescription.
Sounds the same as the States? Well it's fucking not the same. mwa hahahahahaha
Ok, here's why:
In the States:
Step 1: If you do not have insurance, visitng a doctor for a simple illness will run you at least 100-200 usd. That's just to talk to the doctor. This'll run you about 20 USD if you have insurance, but you have to pay for that monthly ahead of time and it has a lot of limitations. Does he give you medication? Sure, he gives you a prescription...
Step 2: Again, if you do not have insurance, depending on what ails you, you will have to pay 20-200 (or more) for medication, or 20-50 or so with insurance.
Total: The average should be about 250usd for a normal doctor's visit if you do not have insurance. With insurance you still pay, out of pocket, about 40usd.
Keep in mind that you must pay for insurance ahead of time to have this insurance, and that it may not allow you to go to just any doctor you want to go to.
In Malaysia:
Step 1: You go to the doctor at a government hospital. For a citizen or permanent resident this costs 1rm. Yes, that's correct 1rm. If you are not one of those you pay more, but it won't be so bad. If you should decide to go to a private clinic, then you will pay more. I paid 29rm for this visit, other visits have cost me 20rm. Does he give you medication? Sure, he gives you a prescription... right in his office and the cost of the medication is INCLUDED in the price he charges.
Step 2: Go home.
Total: The average of my doctor visits here in Malaysia has run me 24.5rm. This incuded the cost of all medications! No insurance required!
States 250USD / Malaysia 24.5RM
Which one sounds better to you when you're not feeling well?
Yeah, I thought so.
I was trying to figure out price comparison but what I found was Malaysian Riggit.
ReplyDeleteI found that 1 USD = about 3.5 MYR
Is that about right?
So you're saying that it costs the equivalent of about 28 cents in USD for a citizen to go to the doctor there?
*Packs bags* :P
-Becca
Er, 1 USD does equal about 3.5 RM.
ReplyDeleteSo my visit to the doctor cost me:
29.00 MYR = 8.24097 USD
If you have permanent residence here or are a citizen, or you are married to a Malaysian citizen, then you can go to a government hospital for 1 Ringgit or:
1.00 MYR = 0.284055 USD
